Elms

Our elm room makes up our friends from 4 to 5 years old

Your child's interests continue to drive the curriculum!!  This is our highest level of academics.  The teachers in this classroom are educated in Elementary Ed so our children are more than kindergarden ready.  Your child chooses a topic to investigate and their teacher helps integrate language, math, science, social studies and the arts into the investigation.  Long term project work is done in large and small interest groups with this age so they can explore the topics they have chosen and report back to the group with what they've learned.  This promotes a higher level of problem solving.  We also have an Art Teacher that comes in twice a week and works in collaboration with the teachers on their projects.  Children explore, interview and create to advance their learning.  Visual arts are an integral part of our Reggio method of teaching.  The visual arts are used as a medium to visualize the growth in children's learning.  The Language Literacy Component we follow is strongly integrated with this age group.  Each day they have joint writing time, they work on their own repetitive books, and they have journal time.  Journal time is started with our toddlers.  Of course at that age they are unable to write as we understand letters and words, but they are able to develop the fine motor skills needed to write with a pencil.  By the time they reach this classroom, many of our students can write letters and words quite well.  Sign Language and Spanish are our 2 languages that are taught and used every day to promote understanding among diverse cultures.  Our "Today We" is a photographic newsletter we send to you so you can watch your children's studies and development daily.
